Seems like just yesterday, Snapchat was on the verge of challenging Facebook. My how things have changed in a year…

Some big updates this week from Facebook and we had a birthday to celebrate!

Let’s do this…

📰 Another Update To Facebook’s Newsfeed Algorithm

It’s frustrating to click on a link that leads to a slow-loading webpage. Facebook knows this and they’re updating their algorithm to make for a better experience for their users. As many as 40 percent of website visitors abandon a site after three seconds of delay. If you’re website loads slowly and you’re posting links to Facebook, you may want to get that website updated.

🎂 Instagram Stories Turns 1: Continues To Clobber Snapchat

Instagram Stories now has 250 million daily users compared to Snapchat’s 166 million. The average usage for those under the age of 25 is 32 minutes per day and 24 minutes per day for those 25 and up. It’s crazy because a year ago it looked like Snapchat was destined to disrupt Facebook’s dominance across social media.

🔓 Facebook Unlocks Public Sharing For Facebook Stories

Facebook Stories (Facebook’s Snapchat clone) officially confirmed that they have rolled out the ability for users to now share their Stories publicly. Prior to this, users were only able to share their stories to their friends. This feature is primarily beneficial for celebrities and public figures. When asked if Facebook Pages would soon be able to post to Facebook Stories, Facebook replied, “For Pages – no specific timing to share there quite yet.”

🖥 Facebook To Bring Facebook Stories To The Desktop Web

Facebook is testing Facebook Stories on the desktop. Up until now, the Stories format for all social networks (Instagram, Facebook, Snapchat, etc) has predominately been a mobile experience. Facebook has confirmed to TechCrunch the Stories launch on desktop is still considered a test, but notes that a wider rollout is expected soon.

🔎 People Are Searching For Ideas and Pinterest Is Making It Easier For Them

Pinterest made a small but very helpful new improvement to their mobile app, they added a new search bar at the top of the users home feed. Visual search is definitely on the rise as people are looking for ideas on travel, crafts, recipes, activities, etc. Monthly mobile text searches are up 40 percent over last last year, and nearly 85 percent of all searches on Pinterest now happen on people’s phones.

💰 Twitter To Add a Subscription Style Ad Program

Twitter is testing with select users a subscription style ad program that costs $99/month. For the monthly fee, Twitter would promote up to 10 tweets a day in addition to running month-long Promoted Account ads. With its ad revenue in decline, Twitter needs to explore ways to boost its business.

📊 LinkedIn Introduces LinkedIn Website Demographics

LinkedIn is launching a free reporting tool that provides brands and businesses in-depth insights about their website traffic and visitors using professional data from LinkedIn’s 500+ million members. Website Demographics will let you filter your website audience by 8 individual professional dimensions (job title, industry, job seniority, job function, company, company size, location, and country).

👥 Facebook Groups For Pages Now Available To All Facebook Pages

This feature lets brands and media companies create their own Groups within Facebook Pages. This is pretty big as there is a lot of activity in Facebook Groups, and this allows brands to create communities within their Facebook Page for their raving fans. It also allows brands to participate in Facebook Groups as opposed to having to rely on one of their Page admins doing so with their personal account.
